There is a military adage that says no battle plan survives first contact with the enemy. For all the tremendous emphasis on preparation, the US armed forces expect to fight amid chaos: plans will be overcome by events, priorities will change, the enemy will do something unexpected, somebody will forget the keys to the tank.
Successful military commanders anticipate the battlefield’s turmoil and prepare for it in the way they develop their subordinates, communicate the mission, and inspire their people. Junior leaders are expected and entrusted to make the hard calls.
In this presentation Ed shares insights into how the American military prepares for and functions in combat. The principles behind this kind of leadership are timeless and independent of an organization’s mission, and the lessons learned are applicable beyond the military.
